Growth Models with Step-by-Step Innovations

内容简介

In the baseline Schumpeterian model, any firm can innovate on any product line without prior knowledge,which ensures analytical tractability. However, in reality,quality improvements often build cumulatively on existing know-how. As Abernathy (1978) observed, firms tend to innovate repeatedly within the same technological area,since past innovations facilitate future ones.

This cumulative aspect is absent from basic models but central to many real-world innovation dynamics. A more realistic framework involves a few frontier firms engaged in ongoing, incremental R&D, competing head-to-head in specific product lines.

In this seminar, we will introduce the step-by-step innovation model, where innovation is sequential and cumulative. This framework allows us to endogenize market structure and better analyze how competition and intellectual property rights affect innovation incentives.Combined with the model of incumbent and entrant innovation, it provides a foundation for understanding how continuing firms contribute to long-run productivity by building on their own past innovations.
